Remembering January 8th: Together We Thrive Exhibition and Tribute
An exhibition and tribute to the true character and compassion of Tucson, in the wake of a tragedy that touched us all. The tribute materials that were collected from the memorial sites that appeared after the January 8, 2011, tragic shooting that happened at Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords’ “Congress on your Corner” event in Tucson.
Exhibits will be on display throughout January 2014 at the Eckstrom-Columbus Library, Nanini Library, and the Joel D. Valdez Main Library starting January 4.

TUCSON, AZ – New details will be unveiled at a press conference next week about the community effort to build a permanent memorial to the January 8, 2011 shooting.The press conference is timed to coincide with a series of events commemorating the third anniversary of the shooting, which resulted in six deaths and 13 injured.
The details about the memorial include the selection of a location and an update on the building process. The press conference also will provide information about the first exhibit of January 8-related memorabilia and opportunities for public participation in the memorial.
Participants in the press conference include U.S. Rep. Ron Baber, Pima County Supervisor Richard Elias, Tucson Mayor Jonathan Rothschild, survivors Pam Simon, Ross Zimmerman and Stephan Brigham, president of Tucson’s January 8th Memorial Foundation.

Like many Tucsonans I spent a lot of time at the 3 memorials that were in existence after that tragic 1/8/11 shooting — at University Medical Center hospital (where mariachi sang most nights at dusk), at the Safeway on Ina/Oracle (where there were 2 wishing poles of good will prayers), and at Congresswoman Gabby Giffords’s former office at the SW corner of Grant/Swan (where there were lots of candles, balloons and other gifts). It was a very emotional time for Tucson. Here’s an image I took at her office memorial:
